San Gabriel Arcangel
The fourth mission, San Gabriel Arcangel was founded September 8, 1771, and presents a unique, fortress-like design. In 1811, San Gabriel reaped one of the largest wheat crops ever recorded by the mission chain.
San Francisco de Asis
Founded on October 9, 1776, San Francisco de Asis is 6th in the mission chain and includes the oldest building in San Francisco city. Named for St. Francis of Assisi, it is also referred to as Mission Dolores after the nearby Lake Dolores.
Santa Ines
Founded on September 17, 1804, Santa Ines became the 19th mission and quickly flourished in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. Travelers were so rare that when one was spotted, bells rang and everyone came to greet them.
San Buenaventura
Father Junipero Serra christened his final mission on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1782. The 9th mission, San Buenaventura featured an unusual triangular design and was the only mission to use wooden bells.
